Title: Challenges of Global Legal Diversity
Dates: 5 - 7 July 2018
Location: International University College of Turin, Turin, Italy
Number of participants: 25
Keynote speaker: Ugo Mattei (Hastings / Turin Law Schools)
Financially driven globalization makes economies and societies ever more interdependent. Contrary to the usual understanding that business actors are mobilized purely by economic incentives, in recent decades the central challenge of working in diverse legal systems has come to light. To facilitate complex cross-border interactions there is an increasing demand for professionals dealing with global dimensions of tax law, banking regulation, trade agreements, investment law, and human rights. Despite these transboundary phenomena, legal education largely focuses on the national dimension, lacking comparative interdisciplinary approaches and the necessary economic knowledge. On the other hand, economic scholarship tends to be abstract and students are usually confronted with difficulties emerging from concrete institutional contexts, especially regarding the international dimension.
Funding: We aim to provide 15 selected participants—current members of the Finance, Law, and Economics Working Group and those who would like to become active members of our working group in the near future—a partial travel grant, including two nights’ accommodation, limited transportation costs, and a dinner during the academy.
Selection: The selection will be based on the merits of the application. We especially encourage applications by advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs whose studies, careers, and research interests are related to the fields of law, economics, and finance, and who would like to become active members of our working group. Please be aware that you will have to cover any additional expenses yourself.
