This research project improves our understanding of the effects of intellectual property rights—and in particular copyrights—on creativity and innovation. To achieve this goal, the project examines the effects of copyrights on 1) fiction writing, 2) music, and 3) the diffusion of scientific knowledge. The research exploits historical changes in copyright policies that were exogenous to examine the effects of copyrights. The project also constructs new data sets to measure variation in the quantity and quality of creativity and innovation in the arts and sciences.
